Why choose products that meet FloorScore® standards

Many flooring materials release toxic emissions, which are volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air that can include dust, allergens, and even formaldehyde. These emissions can have detrimental effects on health – even causing cancer. That is the reason choosing FloorScore certified materials that ensure low and harmless VOC emissions is important.

What materials can be certified FloorScore®?

FloorScore® is provided to certified hard surface materials such as bricks, cement, laminate flooring, SPC floors, bamboo floors, rubber floors, trims … and some adhesives and liners.

How to be qualified for FloorScore®?

Floor products must go through a process of evaluations, including evaluation of product formulations and manufacturing facility control systems, on-site audits, and product emissions testing.

FloorScore tests for 35 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) follows international standard (California Specification 01350) for emission testing and assessment.

What are volatile organic compounds (VOC)?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency defines a VOC as any carbon compound (except for carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, carbonic acid, metal carbide or carbonate and ammonium carbonate) that are involved in photochemical reactions in the atmosphere. VOCs are emitted from certain solids or liquids and are comprised of a wide variety of organic chemicals, some of which may have adverse effects on health in the short-term and longterm. Concentrations of VOCs are usually higher indoors (up to 10 times) than outside, thus affecting users’ health. The most dangerous substances can be mentioned as acrolein, formaldehyde, benzene, etc.

Why do people care about the FloorScore® standard today?

Nowadays, consumer concerns a lot about the product’s safety and health for family members. Besides, there are numerous products containing impurities, chemicals, especially formaldehyde – a substance that causes cancer is on the market. Therefore, consumers prioritize “green” product lines, which have obtained safety certificates for health.
